The Brutalism Of Belgrade: Photographs By Mirko Nahmijas

As the capital of Yugoslavia, Belgrade was subject to the same architectural philosophy as other communist-bloc cities like East Berlin, Moscow and Warsaw. They called it ’socialist modernism’.

Yugoslavia is no more, but over the last few months photographer Mirko Nahmijas has snapped these buildings of the old regime with his Canon, navigating the city on his motorbike as he searches for undiscovered gems.

His work has now been captured in the Minimal Belgrade project, enabling admirers to buy copies of his photos – all of which are printed onto aluminium. Looking at them in all their glory today, you get the feeling that General Tito, the old dictator of this most forward-thinking of communist states, would have been proud.
